Lost flash audio on OSX fix
Monday, April 16th, 2007
This isn’t necessarily related to Flash Lite per se, but as it’s something that potentially will have folks wanting to throw their Mac through the nearest wall, thought I’d post on it. This is a Mac OS X-specific issue, as far as I know, so PC-heads can happily go about their business and ignore this post (I’m sure they have some Vista issues to worry about anyway
It’s possible to suddenly find you can hear no sound, either within the Flash IDE, or the Flash player. The cause is unclear, although it does seem to happen after working with various audio tools. In my case, I was prepping audio for a Flash Lite symbian app, and by the time I noticed the problem, I had touched Bias Peak, Audacity, Amadeus, Quicktime, so not sure when it crept in.
Anyway, if you find yourself where I was, here’s a quick fix, discovered and blogged about already on Frédéric Wenzel’s blog:
1. Open the OS X Audio Midi Setup utility located at /Applications/Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup
2. Change the properties for Built-in Output to 44khz. If it’s set at this already, this fix may work even by simply activating the dropdown, but haven’t tried myself.
3. Quit out of Audio Midi Setup
4. Restart Flash IDE, Flash Player, browser, etc to see the effects in those contexts.
Hope this helps others. As I said, it’s already been blogged about, but worth another mention as it’s one of those things that can cause you to lose hours (or more) of time troubleshooting, as there’s no clear documented cause.
